Street-parking pay stations in Seattle are being converted to reflect new, higher hourly parking rates approved last year by the Seattle City Council.

Already, pay stations have been converted in South Lake Union and Pioneer Square. Downtown pay stations should be converted by the end of the month.

Stickers showing the new rates are being affixed to the pay stations, and a message should show the current rate when you pay.

A chart of new rates is online at www.seattle.gov/transportation/parking/rateincrease09.htm.

The new hourly rate is $2.50, up from $1.50, for short-term, on-street paid parking in the downtown area. In other areas, new rates are $2 or $1.50 per hour, depending on the neighborhood.

What a shock it was.
There I was.... 7:57 AM, in my sweats, hoodie, and a serious case of bed-hair. I didn't have my credit card so I used quarters. One quarter, two, three, four, five, six... hmmm how many will it take to reach two hours of parking. Maybe I should grab my credit card after all and use it instead of quarters. Inserted my CC, press the MAX TIME button and saw $5 for two hours. I had forgotten about the change. What was even more frustrating was to read later in the day in the Seattle times that the downtown shopping district only pays $2 per hour. Even with the rate increase it costs more to park in PS than uptown. That will certainly help our local retailers

Shock +1
The parking fee increase was a shock to me as well. As a resident and business owner in Pioneer Square, I was already bitter about the lack of parking and per hour fees before. Now I am furious. It's a disservice to the businesses and residents in this area to add one more inconvenience to someone driving to pioneer square to eat, shop, or visit a friend. I really believe we should be encouraging people to come to pioneer square and expensive parking frustrates that purpose. Visiting L.A. last year I did some sightseeing in Beverly Hills/Rodeo Drive and was surprised to see not only was there ample, free, 2 hour parking, but we were able to get free valet service as well right in the heart of Rodeo Drive. Suffice to say coming back to PS and our paring situation was frustrating. The valet service is a bit much, but I like the idea of encouraging people to come here and shop. Unfortunately, things like parking fee increases just push me that much closer to relocating my business and my home.
